Lefkada | Ionian islands

Ai Giannis in Lefkada is a stretch of sandy beach of considerable size, both in width and length. It has a reputation among advanced kite surfers because of its challenging degree of difficulty. Many Italian visitors flock to this spot in the summer. Varying temperatures, both on the land and at sea during the day, often create fluctuating wind conditions. As a result, this beach can be windless between 10 and 11:00 in the morning and then get windy between 15 and 20:00.

Paros | Cyclades

A preferred spot for many famous pro athletes and amateurs, the strait between the islands of Paros and Antiparos stands out as a destination adhering to international standards, luring local and foreign enthusiasts. Pounta is a sandy beach with shallow waters, offering perfect side shore wind conditions. In the summer, it becomes the ideal place, thanks to the northwesterly and northeasterly winds that blow in the Aegean Sea, locally known as meltemia. International tournaments are also staged here.

Naxos | Cyclades

The island offers kite surfing amid conditions of unique natural beauty and turquoise waters. Mikri Vigla, meaning small observatory, is a large sandy beach on the island’s southwest side that is ideal for both beginners and advanced kite surfers. It is considered an emerging kite surfing location though it is less established than Pounta in neighboring Paros, attracts fewer visitors. The summer months, when the meltemia winds blow, are best for this spot.

Rhodes | Dodecanese

It is hard to find a kite surfing enthusiast in Europe who does not know about Prasonisi, an islet off the southern tip of Rhodes. This is definitely a destination of international appeal. A thin strip of sand links the islet with Rhodes, dividing the sea into two. One side is appropriate for kite surfers interested in flat surfing, while the other is preferred for wave style surfing. The latter is considered dangerous because of the off shore winds.

Corfu | Ionian islands

Issos beach, referred to as Halikouna by the locals, has an exotic appearance and is roughly four kilometers in length. It is sandy and safe for beginners. The only drawback of this location is that the winds rise less regularly than they do in the Aegean Sea, meaning that some luck is needed for good kite surfing conditions.

Gialova & Romanos beach | Messinia

The sandy beaches at Gialova and Romanos are drawing a growing number of kite surfers throughout the year. Neither Gialova, a small-sized beach, nor Romanos, whose waters run deep abruptly, are considered friendly spots for beginners. Experienced kite surfers like to engage in their beloved hobby here in the winter time as well, usually with northwesterly winds.

Limnos | north Aegean

Kite surfing experts agree that Keros beach is one of the Aegean Sea’s safest spots for beginners. Situated in a bay on the eastern side of the island, its waters are shallow, while the beach is 3k-long. If you like waking up bright and early, the winds will reward you as they blow steadily from the morning to midday hours.

Drepano village | Peloponnese

Kite surfers can count on windy conditions here 365 days a year. The winds come in from both the east and west. An annual kite surfing event is staged at this village’s little pebble-covered beach, while a national kite surfing competition is also held here, usually in July.

Elafonisos | Peloponnese

If you turn up to Simos – a gorgeous beach on this islet’s southern side – with your kite surfing gear in the summertime and encounter a beach filled with sunbathers, don’t panic. A kite surfing spot is located directly next to this spot, at Sarakiniko bay. It’s a sandy beach with perfectly clean waters . The winds do not always blow here, but when the northerly winds hit the spot, spectacular waves are generated. Only highly experienced kite surfers opt for this location in the winter and spring seasons.

Raches | central Greece

You don’t have to be a wind guru to predict windy conditions in Raches. This is virtually a given. A strip of the shoreline at this sandy beach extends into the water to create two kite surfing areas. One is ideal for flat style kite surfing, the other for surfers preferring waves. It is a popular spot for both beginners and advanced kite surfers.

Nea Kios | Peloponnese

Nea Kios, a wide and sandy beach situated in the Argolic Gulf next to Nafplio, has shallow waters and consistent, yet mild, wind conditions. It is an attraction for kite surfers throughout the year and a beloved spot for Athens-based fans of the sport, who venture out here for the day.
