Following the low-pressure front Raphael, which brought snow to many places around Greece on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, another low-pressure weather system, dubbed Sophia, reached Greece on Thursday.
As heavy snow fell across large parts of northern and central Greece, but also on the mountains around Athens and even some of the islands, Instagrammers rejoiced. Taking to the streets, to the woods and to the mountain tops, they captured magical landscapes.

Below are some of our favorite posts featuring snow from the last few days:
Grevena
In the little village of Mavranaioi, on the road to the ski resort Vassilitsa in Grevena, in Western Macedonia, a deer came close enough to be photographed in the thick snow.

Thessaloniki
In Thessaloniki, locals who woke up to a white city on Friday went photo crazy, and hurried out to capture famous landmarks such as the White Tower and George Zongolopoulos’ umbrella sculpture, blanketed in white. One couple even managed to get their wedding photos taken in front of the umbrellas, which are a popular background for Instagram selfies (see the couple’s photo here).

Zagori
Zagori, home to the famous Vikos Gorge (the deepest gorge in the world in proportion to its width), lush forests, rivers, and stone bridges that bring to mind scenes from fantasy films, was also covered in a thick blanket of snow.

Ziria
Now this is snow! Mount Ziria could easily be confused with the Alps any time of the year, but this week’s images make it truly hard to believe its actually situated on the northern Peloponnese.

Corfu
The island of Corfu saw some heavy snowfall as well. Drone photos show the town looking dreamy, with the rooftops covered in a light layer of white.

Volos
Bar hoppers in the university town of Volos, around the Pagasetic Gulf, dared to venture out in the cold on Friday, and got some good shots for it. (Read more about Volos here).

Pelion
Above the city of Volos, the villages on the Pelion peninsula look like they were thought up by Hans Christian Andersen. People come here in the winter with the hope of seeing just the landscape that they got this week, with thick snow covering everything. In the village of Makrynitsa, the lights in the square worked magic in combination with the snow.

Parnitha, Attica
Mount Parnitha is a National Park situated just 45 minutes from Athens, meaning that when it snows here, you can actually see it from the city. Of course, whenever the peaks shine white, Athenians rush up the mountain to play in the snow, and to take selfies.

Lake Plastira
Lake Plastira, in the mountains of the Agrafa region, is a year-round destination. It’s especially popular among trekkers and for canoeing and kayaking, but many also come here just to see some snow around the gorgeous, man-made lake in the winter, and enjoy some hot drinks in front of a fireplace.

Mount Parnassos, in Central Greece, features the biggest and most popular ski resort in the country. Weekends here are always busy, but from what Instagram tells us, the weekdays saw crowds as well this week.

All over the country
Snowmen hitched rides on top of cars all over the country, as is customary in Greece when snow falls in areas that normally only get rain in the winter. And why not? We may be cold, and Christmas may be behind us, but nothing can take the joy out of seeing the world turn into a winter wonderland.
