The excitement surrounding this season’s Greek Sale at Bonhams was palpable, as Greek art continues to rise in prominence on the international market. Among the magnificent works sourced and curated by the team at Art Expertise were several pieces from artists whose works have been reaching record prices.
Tsarouchis’ Jeune homme posant comme Eros avec une chaise anglaise (Youth posing as Eros next to an English chair) achieved a remarkable sale price of €571,900, surpassing its estimated value of €400,000–€600,000 and setting a new global record for the artist. This was the latest in a series of triumphs for Tsarouchis’ works, notably with the sale of The Forgotten Guard in 2020 for €441,375 in Paris November of 2022 and the sale of May – an allegory of the month for €475,542 in Athens in June of 2023.

The sale also demonstrated strong performance from the Generation of the Thirties, with Yiannis Moralis’ Eroticon selling for €483,000 from an estimate of €300,000 – €500,000, and several other works greatly surpassing their estimates. These included Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas’ Hydra Landscape II, which sold for €171,650, well above its estimate of €50,000-€70,000, Spyros Vassiliou’s L’étudiante, which sold for €70,250, and George Zongolopoulos’ Tel-Néant which sold for €56.280, both exceeding their estimate of €25,000-€35,000.
This successful sale is a clear sign of the growing global appreciation for Greek art. According to Terpsichore Angelopoulou, Director of Art Expertise in Athens, “This was a high-quality sale with paintings from all the major eras of Greek art attracting keen interest. Many works met or exceeded their upper estimates, and it was encouraging to see a wide range of bidders not only from the Greek speaking world but from other countries too. We expect this trend to continue in 2025.”
