Tourism: Which Countries Conduct the Most Online Searches for Athens?

A digital marketing study of online searches for Athens from the beginning of 2020 to November 2021 has revealed which countries top the bill.

According to a recent study by Tourix, a Greece-based digital marketing agency, the US, the UK and France were the three countries that conducted the most online searches for Athens as a holiday destination in 2021.

The study, “Latest Data on Athens’ Touristic Demand through the Web, November 2021,” also noted there was a significant increase in the number of searches carried out in the US this year compared to 2020.

The internet continues to be one of the most important tools for tourists, who actively search the web for prospective destinations and accommodation. Internet searches are crucially important for understanding trends in tourism, by region, country and city.

By studying and analyzing the online data from the beginning of 2020 to November 2021, valuable insights have been revealed.

According to the Tourix team, the US retains the top position in terms of demand for accommodation in Athens, with the UK in second place, and then France. Cyprus and Israel followed closely behind.

The study also revealed that, as of this November, searches for Athens from the top nine countries increased compared to November 2020. The most substantial growth was observed in Cyprus (an increase of 534%) and Israel (518%), as well as in the US (125%), Italy (137%) and Germany (104%).

Significant increases were also noted in the Netherlands (95%), Canada (83%), France (79%) and the UK (61%).

Nevertheless, searches for Athens in November 2021 were down in all tracked countries when compared to the figures from the previous month, specifically a decrease of 20% from Cyprus, 13% from the US, 33% from Germany, 14% from Italy, 32% from France, 26% from the Netherlands, 27% from the UK, 13% from Canada.
