In the depths of winter, and with the coronavirus still hanging over us like a long, dark cloud, dreams of summer travel feel like a glimmer of hope shimmering on the horizon. Even now, leading international travel websites and magazines are awash with ideas and lists of top destinations for the summer ahead.
For those seeking a much-needed dose of fun and adventure, a sailing holiday might be just the ticket. Even if you have no experience aboard yachts, but you’re keen to learn, organizing a trip is easier than you think.

In a recent article on sailing holidays for beginners by the National Geographic, offering top tips from industry specialists Sunsail, Croatia, Greece and the British Virgin Islands are the three destinations that top the bill.
For second-placed Greece, the article recommends Lefkada as “an excellent starting point for a sailing holiday around the Ionian Islands.” Connected to the mainland by a long causeway, the island is home to some of Greece’s most stunning beaches, and is famed Mediterranean-wide for its kitesurfing and windsurfing. Rich in history, some scholars have even linked the island with Homer’s Ithaca, the home of the hero Odysseus.
“Point the bow southward to explore the sea caves of Meganisi, ancient ruins of Ithaki and Mediterranean oak forests of Kefalonia,” the article adds.
First-placed Croatia is described as a “modern sailing enthusiast’s dream. Dubrovnik is the gateway to this paradise archipelago and makes for an excellent day’s wandering before you set sail.” Croatia’s famous Dalmatian coast is bejewelled with islands. The article recommends visiting the “enchanting island of Mljet before moving along the coastline to the beaches of the Peljesac Peninsula and Lastovo.”
The third-placed British Virgin Islands are also noted for their beautiful beaches, year-round good weather and steady winds: “ideal conditions for clear and easy line of sight navigation” – perfect for beginners.
