While the popular Mediterranean diet, which is mainly based on Greek cuisine, supports a healthy lifestyle, there are definitely some less-than-healthy Greek dishes that we wouldn’t leave out of our taverna orders. Greeks like to fry food, from cheese (saganaki tiri), to vegetable patties, to pancakes and meatballs. But most famous of all the Greek fried foods is probably the calamari (kalamarakia tiganita).
A guilty pleasure to some, in Greece, it’s a dish commonly prepared for children, who love the crunch and the ring shape. Enjoyed with a squeeze of lemon over the top and a salad on the side, it’s easy to pretend this seafood dish is actually good for you. If nothing else, it’s good for your soul.

Unsurprisingly, kalamarakia is one of the dishes listed on CNNs recent list of the best fried foods in the world.
“Batter-fried or breaded, served with a lemon wedge and either marinara sauce or a creamy mayonnaise-based sauce, this now-ubiquitous dish has gone from a Greek and Italian coastal specialty to high-end American restaurants to a mainstream appetizer. First reported on by The New York Times in 1975, these simple rings of squid might not be as trendy as they were in the ’90s, but the seafood sensation remains on many a menu,” the article stated.
