In Pictures: Snow Comes to Athens

A wave of wintery weather has left much of Greece blanketed in white, with snow settling even in downtown Athens.

Athenians woke on Tuesday to the unusual site of their city covered in a blanket of snow after the storm system dubbed Tilemachos brought freezing temperatures and snowfall across the country.

Overnight several inches of snow settled even in downtown Athens, blanketing trees, cars and ancient ruins alike.

In the more northern suburbs the snowfall was even heavier, with some roads temporarily impassable and trains and bus services disrupted.

But despite the difficulties the predominant sense on social media was one of joy. With many schools closed due to the cold weather, Athenians young and old took to the streets to build snowmen and engage in snowball fights.

Below are some of our favorite images of wintery Athens.
