Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the launch of a pilot project that aims to improve digital services for residents and visitors to Naxos. It is estimated that in August alone the island welcomed over 145,500 visitors, a number that exceeded 2019 levels.
AWS, the subsidiary of the American technology group offering cloud computing services (AWS Cloud) where businesses and individuals store their data, will create apps to digitally record passenger ship arrivals and departures, as well as to transport pharmaceutical materials to residents using drones.

“Smart Island is a project based on cloud solutions, aiming to improve the quality of life of Naxos’ residents and to make the island an even more attractive destination for tourists and digital nomads. We want to work with the local government and residents and hope to also bring this project to other islands, provincial areas and cities,” said Cameron Brooks, Director of Europe Public Sector for AWS.
The project to upgrade the island’s infrastructure, marina, energy grid and water management systems will run through the implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT), utilizing a 5G network. AWS has partnered with 23 multinational and Greek start-ups and public organizations for this purpose.
“The Smart Island project is a vision of the future where technological tools are used creatively, upgrading the everyday life of all citizens. We are particularly pleased that Amazon Web Services has chosen Greece and Naxos to launch its new initiative on an international level. Over the last three years we have had a very productive cooperation, with significant investments and actions in the field of digital transformation,” said Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Minister of Digital Governance at yesterday’s project announcement event in Naxos.
The Minister of Development and Investment, Adonis Georgiades said “Amazon Web Services’ investment in Naxos puts Greece at the global forefront. It is a game changing investment as it creates a new digital environment on one of the most important Greek island destinations, contributing decisively to the improvement of everyday life for its residents and strengthening its attractiveness as a global tourist destination.”
