Named after Ares, the Greek god of war, Areopoli square reportedly served as the launching pad for the Greek Revolution against the Ottomans, on March 17, 1821. These days, the overall setting at the listed historic center of Areopoli, featuring March 17 Square, the Church of the Archangels (“Naos Taxiarhon”), cobbled streets, stone-built towers, hostels, tavernas, and bars, could not be more peaceful.
