Cycladic Island of the Day: Serene Anafi

Looking for insider tips to the island of Anafi? Here’s what we tell our friends.

I want to avoid the August crowds – where should I go swimming?

Agious Anargirous. Getting to one of the island’s most remote beaches requires walking along a short path after parking your vehicle. It is unorganized, with golden sand and turquoise-emerald waters.

Where can I enjoy dinner with a view?

At Steki (Tel. (+30) 22860.61380) in Hora, next to the square. It may even boast the best sea view, especially at sunset. Order the fish soup, stuffed calamari, roast vegetables and a salad made with vegetables from their garden.

Does Anafi have any nightlife?

First you will see the sunrise, and then you can go home. This is the routine if you go to Mantres, Anafi’s legendary bar that has been operating for more than 20 years. Alternative rock music is paired with good drinks here. If it is windy, this will provide an additional… challenge.

Where can I experience the most beautiful sunrise?

Kalamos is the highest point of the island (460m), crowned by Panagia Kalamiotissa, a small white chapel. Take your sleeping bag and provisions, and begin your ascent in the afternoon. It should take about 1 hour and 15 minutes to hike this barren terrain, as you enjoy the most amazing views of the Aegean and the surrounding islands. Spending a night in the monastery courtyard is a unique life experience.
