Christmas in Epirus

Whether it’s the charming town of Metsovo or the picturesque villages of Elati, Paramythia and Vourgareli, Epirus offers the perfect setting for a peaceful and relaxing holiday in the Greek countryside.

Paramythia, Thesprotia

In the heart of Paramythia, a delightful holiday event transforms the Voulgari building into Paramythoupoli (Fairytale Town). This former school, donated by Sotirios Voulgaris, the founder of the Bvlgari dynasty, becomes a festive hub during the holidays, featuring traditional wooden cottages, a free-entry ice-skating rink, hot chocolate, and seasonal treats. The event also offers a packed schedule of theatrical performances, music shows, and creative workshops for children.

Nestled on the slopes of Mount Gorilas, located between Ioannina and Igoumenitsa, Paramythia is a vibrant town with a rich history. Stroll through its pedestrian streets and alleys, explore its charming shops, and discover landmarks like the Clock Tower (dating back to 1750), the Byzantine Baths, the Castle of Aghios Donatos, and the Koulia Tower.

Where to stay

Opt for the preserved Arhontiko Riga 1872 or Theasis Hotel.

Vourgareli, Arta

Located at 800 meters under the peaks of the Tzoumerka Mountains and just 60 kilometers from Arta, Vourgareli is surrounded by lush greenery. The central square, shaded by plane trees, offers panoramic views of the mountain slopes, making it an ideal spot for quiet and restful Christmas holidays.

At the village’s highest point stands the Monastery of Aghios Georgios, with its striking bell tower at the entrance. The Red Church (Panagia Vella), the most famous landmark in the area, is only five kilometers from Vourgareli. Believed to date back to the 11th century, this Byzantine basilica is famous for the red bricks used in its construction.

Elati, Ioannina

Perched at an altitude of 960 meters, Elati is known for its traditional Zagorian stone houses and sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. Every year, the local cultural association decorates the central square and public spaces with elegant festive lights, bringing the village to life during the holiday season.

Elati provides the perfect winter holiday setting, with mist that often blankets the village and snow-covered landscapes, perfect for both forest walks and cozy evenings by the fireplace. If weather permits, you can hike the scenic trails and short pathways that surround the village.

Metsovo, Ioannina

For those dreaming of a white Christmas in a storybook mountain setting, Metsovo is the ultimate winter destination. One of Greece’s most iconic Christmas getaways, Metsovo delivers everything you could wish for: stunning natural landscapes, festive decorations, and hearty local cuisine.

Perched at 1,160 meters on the slopes of the Pindus Mountains, Metsovo is often the first place in Greece to welcome snow. Stroll through the charming shops on the central square for traditional products and souvenirs, visit the Tositsa Foundation Cheese Factory and the Katogi Averoff Winery, and explore cultural highlights like the Folklore Museum and the Averoff Gallery. For winter sports enthusiasts, the Anilio Ski Center is just a 25-minute drive away. On New Year’s Eve, the central square hosts a festive celebration with bonfires, wine, and delicious local food.
