NEW Hotel: Brazilian Appeal in Athens

This renovated hotel brings a touch of Brazilian design in the capital

LOCATION

Filellinon Street, on the fringes of historic Plaka and a hop from Syntagma Square.

BACKGROUND

The mix & match esthetics, the combination of vintage and contemporary elements, as well as the eccentric interior design which imitates a Brazilian favela, were among the initial reasons that made this NEW Hotel the talk of town back in 2004 when it was renovated.
The hotel formerly known as Olympic Palace Hotel changed looks and brought a completely new perspective to Athenian hoteling, affirming its new name. The design of the hotel is signed by the award-winning Brazilian designer duo Fernando and Humberto Campana, in collaboration with a team of Greek architecture students. The Brazilian brothers used a laboratorial approach and during the renovation set up a workshop inside the old hotel whose goal was to infuse their contemporary perspective with elements inspired by the Greek civilization and local customs, dressing the contemporary design with Greek elements reminiscent of the surrounding area.
The clientele consists of sophisticated and fashionable visitors seeking high-end esthetics and uniqueness, but also artists and intellectuals looking for inspiration.

FEATURES

79 sun-bathed rooms with views on the historic center of Athens. The discreet use of bamboo offer warmth, while modern murals provide an arty ambiance.
Meeting rooms, featuring state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment and arranged in the ‘Campana’ style with signature design furniture and minimalist esthetics, are to be found on the mezzanine of the hotel, available for business meetings and events.
New Sense, the hotel’s Gym and Wellness Club, boasts a fully-equipped fitness room, open 24/7, a Jacuzzi and a steam bath.

EAT & DRINK

The restaurant New Taste on the ground floor of the hotel serves Mediterranean cuisine with a preference for comfort food and inspires relaxation. The fresh, organic products used in every dish comprise the basic gastronomical highlight. In the same space there is an Espresso Bar serving authentic espresso, probably the best macaroons in town, fresh sandwiches, traditional breads and pastries – all produced daily at the hotel’s bakery. This is considered by connoisseurs of the area as the hippest Athenian pastry shop. On the 7th floor is the New Art Lounge, a perfect place to relax with a glass of wine or a cocktail while taking in the panoramic view of Athens.
