Skopelos Tops French List of Greece’s Most Beautiful Film Locations

Skopelos has been ranked first among Greece's most stunning film locations, according to a survey by the French travel website Generation Voyage.

A recent article titled “Explorez les 6 plus beaux lieux de tournage en Grèce” by popular French website Generation Voyage showcases six breathtaking film locations in Greece that offer unique travel experiences, with Skopelos leading the list. The location in question is the renowned Church of Aghios Ioannis at Kastri, boasting panoramic views of the Aegean Sea. Perched atop a 100-meter-high rocky cliff, this picturesque setting was immortalized in the 2008 film adaptation of the hit musical “Mamma Mia!” turning the once pirate lookout into a global attraction for couples, nature enthusiasts, and hikers.

Eva Karamesini, President of the Tourism Committee of the Municipality of Skopelos, highlighted the island’s irresistible charm. “Mamma Mia in Skopelos is not just a movie; it’s an experience. Visitors fall in love with our nature, hospitality, local cuisine, fairytale villages, and activities. They return again and again, becoming our friends,” she explained.

To further capture the romantic atmosphere of “Mamma Mia,” the Municipality of Skopelos produced a unique music video featuring Greek pianist Elena Xidia. Filmed against the backdrop of Skopelos’ blue-green waters, Xidia played timeless ABBA compositions on a piano placed near the famous chapel. This initiative was supported by numerous volunteers, showcasing the community’s dedication to promoting their island.

Agia Triada Monastery, Meteora – “For Your Eyes Only”

The Agia Triada Monastery, perched on a rocky peak in Thessaly, gained international fame as the backdrop for the 1981 James Bond film “For Your Eyes Only.” Founded in 1476 and situated 400 meters above the village of Kalambaka, this UNESCO-protected site is set among the renowned rock pillars of Meteora, one of Greece’s most spectacular landscapes. A key tourist attraction, Meteora boasts towering rocks topped by age-old monasteries, offering visitors an unforgettable experience.

The Windmills of Little Venice, Mykonos – “The Bourne Identity”

Mykonos’ iconic windmills, featured in the climax of the 2002 film, “The Bourne Identity,” capture the essence of Greece’s authentic and photogenic charm. Built by Venetians in the 16th century, these windmills offer spectacular views of the Alefkandra port and the nearby village of Hora, attracting countless visitors from around the world.

Amorgos – “The Big Blue”

Known for its stunning underwater beauty, Amorgos was immortalized by Luc Besson’s 1988 classic “The Big Blue” (Le Grand Bleu), the heavily fictionalized story of the friendship and sporting rivalry between two champion free divers, Jacques Mayol and Enzo Maiorca. This Cycladic island features pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and impressive cliffs. The Chozoviotissa Monastery, perched on a dark cliff, and the Mount Krikellos peak provide a breathtaking landscape, while the aptly named “The Big Blue” café offers memorabilia and themed dishes.

Argostoli, Kefalonia – “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”

Argostoli, the main town of Kefalonia, combines historical charm and scenic beauty, making it a perfect setting for the 2001 film “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin,” starring Penélope Cruz and Nicholas Cage. Despite WWII and a major earthquake in 1953, Argostoli has rebuilt itself with highlights such as the Saint Theodore Lighthouse, De Bosset Bridge, and the Korgialenios Museum, becoming a must-visit destination.

Stavros Beach, Crete – “Zorba the Greek”

Stavros Beach, located on the Akrotiri peninsula near Hania, Crete, features clear blue waters and dramatic mountains. This tranquil spot was the setting for the iconic sirtaki dance scene in the Academy Award winning film from 1964, “Zorba the Greek,” starring Anthony Quinn, Alan Bates, and Irene Pappas. Despite its cinematic fame, Stavros Beach has retained its authentic charm, offering visitors a perfect place for relaxation and exploration.
