Perched atop the Lycabettus Hill, boasting panoramic views of the Greek capital, the historic open-air amphitheater will finally reopen its doors to the public after closing in 2008 due to safety concerns.
The iconic venue, designed by architect Takis Zenetos, is currently undergoing extensive upgrades in time for its much-anticipated reopening at the end of August, according to Attica Regional Governor Giorgos Patoulis in a recent statement to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (AMNA). The upgrades over the coming months will include strengthening the structure of the theater, replacing its seats, and installing new canteen, lighting, fire, and communications systems.

The Region of Attica has set aside a budget of 3.9 million euros for the ambitious renovation project, which will transform it into a modern, state-of-the-art cultural venue for the city.
Regional Governor Patoulis, who worked in close collaboration with the Municipality of Athens and the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports to develop the upgrade plan, is determined that the theater will be ready for use by August 30th, in time for a planned festival in September.
Prior to its closure in 2008, the Lycabettus Theater hosted a wide range of Greek and international musical performances.
