Work is progressing to upgrade the lighting on the main roads of Attica, with the replacement of old energy-intensive luminaires with modern low-consumption and high-performance LED lamps.

According to an announcement by the Attica Region, the most central road arteries now have new lighting, including Syggrou Avenue, Posidonos Avenue, Vouliagmenis Avenue, Amalias Avenue, Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, Kifissias Avenue, Pireos Avenue, Petrou Ralli Avenue, Vari – Koropi Avenue, Athens – Sounio Avenue, Athens Avenue and the New National Road Athens – Corinth. It is estimated that by the end of the year, all the main roads of Attica will have LED lighting.

The project, which is part of the strategic planning of the Region of Attica for the aesthetic, environmental and road upgrade of the metropolitan infrastructure of Attica, concerns the installation of 23,790 LED lamps on the most important avenues of Attica with a total budget of 36.9 million euros, with funding from the Region, through the Regional Operational Programme of Attica 2014-2021.

The new lighting of the roads effectively contributes to the upgrading of road safety as visibility is significantly improved during night driving hours, while at the same time it is more environmentally friendly, with a low energy footprint and recyclable materials, the announcement says.

The lamps are fully controlled through a remote management system, which means that in real time, data on their condition (operation – consumption) can be obtained. Also, the new led technology lamps have a rated power of 42 watts, compared to 400 watts of the old ones and work seamlessly for about 100,000 hours, that is, for 7 years, while the old ones need changing every year.

At the same time, according to the calculations of the competent authorities, use of the new lamps will save more than 1,5 million euros on an annual basis.
