Mykonos Arts Festival 2022 Kicks Off

With a staggering variety of live music performances, theatrical plays, film screenings and parties on offer, Mykonos gets arty till September.

Mykonos’ Art Festival 2022 is in full swing as of June 25 with an official opening on June 28 and a run of events until September. This year’s edition will present a wide-ranging series of artistic events in numerous spaces, as well as video screenings, music concerts, theatrical performances, and more.

The opening of the festival tonight will be accompanied by a 3D video projected on the façade of Mykonos’ town hall and a performance by soprano Myrsini Margariti, who will sing famous arias accompanied by guitarist Korina Vougioukas. Festivities will continue with a dance party till dawn with a DJ set by Anna Paschalidou.

Ilia Papaspyrou, the festival’s new artistic director, opened the event with a talk in which she introduced one of the key ambitions of the festival – for events to encourage visitors to discover Mykonos’ public spaces. “Who enters the space and why, what do they see, what does it make them think, and how do they shape it? What do we demand of the alleyways and squares of this beautiful Chora, and how can we use these spaces in new ways, both the island’s well-known ‘landmarks’ and the lesser known and neglected spots?”

Some of the performance highlights include live Baroque music at the Archaeological Museum, a concert of medieval music by the Athens Early Music Centre Ensemble under the direction of Dimitris Kountouras at the Church of Panagia Rodarios in Alefkandra, saxophonist Dimitris Vassilakis with his quartet and special guest the great American saxophonist Craig Bailey, the band Sugahspank, and the Polis Ensemble. Singers Katy Garbi and Dimitra Galani will also be performing on two evenings, and there will be a special tribute to the famous Greek composer Thanos Mikroutsikos by Christos Thevaios and Kostas Thomaidis.

This year, and for the first time collaborating with the Athens Open Air Film Festival, Mykonos’ Art Festival will offer audiences the chance to enjoy seaside screenings under the stars at open-air theaters. On July 12 there will be a screening of “The Big Lebowski,” and on July 13, the night of the full moon, of the musical “Moulin Rouge.”

Also, this summer the festival is taking a trip to Delos with a performance at the sacred archaeological site on September 9. There, visitors will be able to attend the theatrical performance “PHAETHON,” directed by Ephi Theodorou and distributed by Maria Skoulas, Andreas Konstantinou and Lambros Constanteas, with live music by Solis Barki.

Local artists will participate in the festival, with traditional and contemporary music and dance shows and the theatrical performance “We the Greeks” by the Mykonos Theatre Group, directed by Dominikos-Dimitri Koukas.

The Mykonos Gastronomy Club will also host a “feast” inspired by “100 Years of Spice” and the flavors of Asia Minor.
