Cycladic Island of the Day: Lunarlike Milos

Beach landscapes and sunsets that are out of this world, delicious baked goods and a mining museum - here are our best insider tips for the island of Milos.

So many beaches! How do I choose?

If you want to see them all – there are over 70 – take a tour around the island with one of the boats that set off from Adamas. If traveling by car, make your selection depending on the wind. The island’s “beach-landmarks” include: Sarakiniko, Agios Konstantinos, Papafragas, Firiplaka, Paliohori, Tsigrado, and Theiorihia.

What else is there to do?

With a mining history that dates back centuries and the largest bentonite mine in Europe, it is worth visiting the Milos Mining Museum in Adamas and taking an organized tour of the mines. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, all tours are private (Tel. (+30) 22870.22481, milosminingmuseum.gr, open Tuesday-Sunday 10:00-14:00 and 19:00-21:00).

Where should I watch the sunset?

Sunset aficionados vote for Plaka. Alternatively, in Panagia Korfiatissa (enjoying a cocktail at Verina, Tel. (+30) 6944.377.440), at Thalassitra above the Castle or, if you are lucky enough to find one, from a spot at the bar Utopia. Another great choice by the sea is in the fishing village of Klima.

Where can I get the best breakfast to go?

Mouratos bakery (Tel. (+30) 22870.22800), in Katifora, serves the best pitarakia (mini cheese pies filled with spicy grated xirotiri cheese, spearmint and onion), ladenia (flatbread with tomatoes and caramelized onions), as well as karpouzopita (sweet pie made from local watermelon that can be eaten warm or cold).
