Watching movies under the stars is a beloved activity all over Greece. In cities and in villages, open-air cinemas open in spring and screen everything from black and white classics to the latest blockbusters, while the popcorn machines work overtime to produce the guilty pleasure snacks to be sold at intermission, all through summer.

But right now, residents and visitors to Naoussa and the surrounding area can experience the summer tradition in a different setting, void of the popcorn scent. At the makeshift outdoor cinema at the Kir-Yianni Estate, one of Greece’s largest vineyards, you’ll want your nostrils and tastebuds available for different scents and flavors.

Established in 1997, Kir-Yianni’s two wineries (one in Naoussa and one Amyndeon) were created by Yiannis Boutaris, following a tradition of four generations winemakers. The Naoussa estate is located at the highest point in the region, at the family’s vineyard which has been attributed with establishing the production of terroir wines in the region.

At this location, a temporary screen is mounted, flanked by dreamy views of the surrounding rolling hills, with chairs and rugs set out for an audience to watch movies while sipping on some of the winery’s production, and nibbling on treats more suitable than popcorn and candy.

The next movie night, featuring the 2009 film Julie and Julia, starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, will take place on Sunday, June 25th. The screening starts at 21:00, but guests are asked to arrive at 20:30.

The Kir-Yianni Estate in Naoussa is about a 1 hour and 20-minute drive from Thessaloniki, and 2 hours and 20 minutes to 3 hours from Halkidiki.
