Glamping in Greece: 6 Places to Camp in Style and Comfort

Enjoy nights spent in nature under starry skies, with all the adventure of camping, and all the comforts of a hotel.

1. Halkidiki, Northern Greece: Bubble Tents

These round transparent tents that allow you to enjoy the night sky while lying on your bed became popular among those traveling to Scandinavian countries to see the Northern Lights, but they’re catching on here in Greece, too. In Nea Moudania, only 250m from the sea, four tents, each with its own garden, provide all the amenities you need: a double bed, a bathroom and a living room. Comfortable conditions are maintained thanks to fans, air conditioners and ventilation systems. During the hottest parts of the day, artificial shade helps keep temperatures down. Each tent has a private Jacuzzi in the garden. Breakfast is not offered this year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

2. Tzoumerka, Epirus: Theasis Igloo

In the forest of Sigena, near the village of Ktistades, you’ll find four small, stone “igloos” with magnificent views of Mt Strongoula, Tzoumerka’s famous peak. These dwellings are fully equipped; you can make breakfast or other meals in the kitchen using fresh ingredients provided to you by the establishment’s owners. The round buildings with cone-shaped roofs are made from wood and stone, and they blend in perfectly with the surrounding environment; what’s more, their glass skylights allow you to watch the skies at night without stepping out the door.

Different activities are offered by professional guides in the region, including rafting, horseback riding on mountain trails, canyoning and hiking. If you’d rather go it alone, there are plenty of accessible and well-marked hiking paths. The lack of light pollution in the area makes for ideal stargazing conditions; many people come here with their own astronomy equipment, but don’t worry; a portable telescope is also available for guests.

3. Limnos Island: Surf Club Keros

Just a five-minute walk from one of the best wind and kite-surfing beaches in the country, 53 luxury tents are nestled in the heart of a Natura 2000-protected ecosystem. The tents come in four sizes, ranging from 10 m2 to 35 m2, and all come fully equipped with beds and bedding and electrical power. The bigger the tent, the greater the number of amenities – such as terraces, bathrooms, fans, and air conditioners. The surf club has a well-appointed beach station just a short walk away, and also organizes daily trips as well as yoga and SUP yoga classes when the weather permits. The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. The beach bar is open all day for snacks.

4. Messinia, Peloponnese: Agrikies Country Retreat

Agrikies began with five small stone houses set inside an olive grove that the owner had inherited from her family. A Dutch visitor told her about glamping and, in 2015, she bought South African-made safari tents which have proved an ideal accommodation option for families with children. On site, you’ll find a swimming pool and a restaurant offering breakfast as well as a la carte local cuisine. Yoga classes and massage sessions can be organized upon request, as can yoga retreats. Additionally, the owners will help you plan day trips, including excursions to both popular and lesser-known beaches, scuba diving off the small island of Proti, and hiking to some of the region’s 35 (!) waterfalls.

5. Fthiotida, Mainland Greece: ΝISI, Raches Beach

Drawing inspiration from their stays in nature during their years of travels in Africa and Asia, the owners of NISI built an environment for those who want the camping experience without hardships. They have created a beautiful space next to the sea, with canvas tents, a tree house, and small houses, some designed as eco-houses. All have electricity and are spacious furnished accommodations decorated in warm colors, with comfortable beds. The houses have individual bathrooms, while shared showers and toilet facilities – with excellent reviews from visitors – are available for those staying in the rest of the accommodations. NISI also allows people to bring their own tent.

On the daily events calendar, you’ll find activities such as concerts, movie screenings, theater performances and international gastronomy soirées. Children can take part in athletic, artistic and environmental activities. Daily trips to meet professionals around the area are offered, too; these visits range from watching artisanal bread be made at a small bakery to cycling trips to the nearby winery.
