Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos has been named the third best airport in the world in the annual rankings produced by AirHelp, a company that assists with passenger claims.

Specifically AIA attained an overall of 83.8% (8.38 points out of ten) coming in the top three out of 132 airports assessed in the AirHelp Score 2019. The airports chosen included the busiest and most well-known travel hubs in the world, while others were left out of the rankings due to a lack of data.

AIA was given a score of 8.1 for punctuality of flights, 9.0 for the quality of services and 8.7 for the quality of its retail and food outlets. The only two airports to be given higher overall scores were Doha’s Hamad International Airport and Tokyo’s Haneda International Airport.

The airport of Eindhoven, the International Airport of Kuwait and the Lisbon Portela Airport were at the bottom of the rankings.

In order to create the rankings, AirHelp used flight statistics databases, customer reviews and its own experience in seeking compensation for passengers following delayed flights. For the ranking of the 132 airports (with data from January – December 2018) the chief criterion (with a weighting of 60%) was the punctuality of flights. For a flight to be considered “on time” its departure / arrival time must be within 15 minutes of that scheduled.

Another 20% of the final scores was determined by the quality of services, such as passenger care and security checkpoints, as well as airports’ overall cleanliness, with passengers asked to rank airports on a scale from 1 to 5.

The remaining 20% of the overall score was derived from similar passenger surveys regarding the quality of shops and dining options available at each airport.
