This Award Winning Video will Make you Fall in Love with Aegina

The perfect island for a quick getaway from Athens gets the timelapse treatment

Few Athenians have not been to Aegina. Taking just 45 minutes to get to from Athens, this island is renowned for its PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) pistachios, ancient Aphaia Temple and wooden fishing boats, a standard sight upon arriving at Aegina port.

Three friends, all island residents sharing an interest in photography, decided that they wanted to shed light on lesser known aspects of Aegina. One of the three, Heraklios Koukoulis, a taxi driver, envisaged frames of prospective shots while driving around on the job. The other two, Panagiotis Rodis, a company employee, and Antonis Sklavenas, a taverna owner, shared the same passion.

“We walked a lot on the island and, at some point, thought about doing something so that all this time spent taking pictures would not go astray,” they agreed.

After studying other videos made using the time-lapse technique, the trio decided to make its own. Their resulting video, “Aegina Chronolapse”, challenges both tourists and locals to head outdoors and discover the locations presented so as to become better acquainted with Aegina. This venture took two years to complete. The end result features 20,000 images, culled from a total pool of 60,000 photos provided for editing. On January 2017, it won a Timelapse Photographer Award of Recognition at the Hollywood International Independent Documentary Awards Film Festival.
