Santorini Like you’ve Never Seen it Before

An enormous effort is underway to create a digital archive of thousands of photographs documenting life on the island before the devastating earthquake of 1956. Here is but a tiny sample.

Over the years, Santorini has inspired all those who have gazed upon the unique volcanic landscape of the island.

In the second half of the 19th century, this human fascination found support from technology, and the first photographs of Santorini and its inhabitants were taken. Today, a new project recording and digitizing photographs from all the different photographic collections available, including individual family collections, has begun, and so far more than 6000 photographs from the 1860s up to 1956 have been scanned.

The results to date provide a unique insight into Santorini’s ever-changing landscape and the lifestyles of its residents.
