The sleepy village of Kokkari on Samos was included among Europe’s 13 Best Hidden Gems for 2016. Brussels-based Best European Destinations, an organization created to promote culture and tourism in Europe, ranked the picturesque, but relatively unknown fishing port, as third on its list of unknown treasures.
The small town, surrounded by remote bays and beaches, is 10k from the city of Vathi, the capital of Samos. Secluded in lush mountainous vegetation, the village is off the beaten track but well worth visiting for its exquisite views. Whether for a dip in the crystal-clear waters during the day or to enjoy fresh fish in the moonlight, Kokkari is a veritable find for even the most seasoned traveler.
Samos is described as an island ruled by “legend and beauty” that is the birthplace of mathematician Pythagoras, astronomer Aristarchus and philosopher Epicurus.
“Everything around the virgin landscape is made of color and light,” states the group that is in partnership with the European Commission’s EDEN (European Destinations of Excellence) Network.
Background

This is not the first time Greece has ranked highly on the list of Best European Destinations. Athens came second, moving up a notch, behind Zadar in the city rankings following international voting, whereas the Acropolis made the site’s Seven Wonders category. The infinity pool at the Life Gallery was voted Europe’s sixth best pool, whereas Navagio Beach, Zakynthos, was listed as the 2nd best beach in Europe. Santorini, – which could not be absent from the Best Romantic Destinations, also featured among the top 10 wine destinations.
