Masabi, the mobile ticketing technology developer, and the Athens transport system have won an accolade for the Most Successful Mobile Ticketing Program at the 2016 Transport Ticketing and Passenger Information Awards, held in late January at the London Transport Museum.
The annual event recognizes most successful and influential projects and contributors to the transport industry globally.

Referring to the win, the judges said: “Transport for Athens has introduced an all around fantastic transport solution for the city in partnership with Masabi. As the first multi-modal, mobile ticketing program accessible in a capital city, the scale of this project and the popularity with customers are extremely impressive.”
The city’s new smartphone ticketing system allows customers to buy tickets anywhere at any time by downloading an app.
Masabi is a world leader in mobile ticketing and fare collection for transportation with a global customer base. In collaboration with the Transport for Athens network, they launched the mobile ticketing scheme in December 2014. It allows customers to buy tickets for all modes of public transport through their smartphones, saving valuable time and avoiding the headache of kiosks that run out of tickets or faulty ticket machines.
“We are thrilled and honored to have seen our work alongside MasterCard in Athens recognized with this prestigious award,” said Josh Nicklin, Head of Business Development- EMEA at Masabi.

“As a company we are dedicated to a common goal of improving the way people travel in cities across the world and our work with Athens is an example of the way that simplifying and modernizing a city’s’ infrastructure can make it smarter.”
