Greece’s Biggest Graffiti Οpens to Public

The largest graffiti artwork on an industrial site in Greece has been created as part of the Open House Thessaloniki 2015 program.

The program, now in its fourth year, acquaints visitors with the city’s creative side. The graffiti appears on an industrial estate at the Titan Cement factory in the city. The paintings cover an area of 2,000 square metres. The artists behind the project, Christos and Vassilis Galazoulas took advantage of the available space to create Greece’s largest example of street art, depicting a natural landscape of mountains, rivers, trees and birds. The aim of their initiative was to combine the natural and industrial environments.

“This art was commissioned by Titan Cement. We at Open House Thessaloniki in collaboration with Made in Thessaloniki showcased it for this year’s event. The event has concluded, but the graffiti will remain on display for members of the public,” said Renata Douma, Open House Thessaloniki’s head of communications.

The graffiti is the only example of its kind on an industrial site in Greece and represents one of the largest displays of street art in Europe.

Greek street artists have been around since the 1980s, but the art form has really taken off as a form of expression since the onset of the financial crisis. Greek street art now enjoys a strong following and has gained the attention of the international press in recent years.

Open House is one of the most important international institutions for the promotion of architecture. The concept was born in London in 1992 and gradually spread to cities around the world. Open House aims to help the public explore and understand the architecture of the area where they live.
