Lefkada, a Versatile Island

The combination of stunning beaches, mountain landscapes and a fascinating main town have made Lefkada very popular with Greeks.

Accessible by car, which means without the additional cost of ferry tickets, Lefkada has recently become a popular travel destination for Greeks in the throes of an economic crisis. Options seem endless on this large, western island, blessed with internationally acclaimed beaches, traditional villages and a fascinating main town, also called Lefkada. Visitors will never get bored on Lefkada. They can enjoy the comfort of luxurious hotels and pamper themselves at upscale restaurants located on the island’s east coast or visit its old-fashioned villages and discover the secrets of local craftsmanship. Adventure seekers can explore more alternative swimming options along the west coast.

Ideally, you need a car to get around; and there are so many things to do that a short visit will not do justice to the island. Highlights include swimming at the famous beaches of Porto Katsiki and Egremni, the latter accessed only after a rather challenging uphill and downhill hike. Visits to the mountain villages of Exanthia, Karya and Eglouvi are highly recommended, before strolling through the bustling town of Nydri in the evening or wandering through the tiny streets of the Old Town and catching a performance at its annual summer festival.

WHERE TO SWIM

Numerous beaches with white sand, washed by turquoise waters, dot the island’s west coast, all the way from Aghios Nikitas to Vassiliki. To avoid the crowds, visitors are advised to go early to the most popular beaches such as Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma. Other options include the beautiful beach of Mylos next to the village of Aghios Nikitas, with Kalamitsi close by, or the charming beaches of Lygia, Nydri and Vassiliki on the other side of the island.
