For the Love of Wine

The wine bar trend reflects the upturn in Greek wine production. Here are some of our favorites.

Syntagma Square has become something of a hub for the city’s growing population of oenophiles. One of the longest established wine bars in the area is Oinoscent, which serves a number of Greek gems along with popular labels from around the world.

Just a short walk away, on a pedestrian-only street next to the Orthodox Metropolitan Church, is the tiny, atmospheric Heteroclito with exclusively Greek offerings, including the exceptional organic Melissokipos from the Paterianakis Estate, the highly recommended Santorini from the Sigalas Winery and the memorable Limniona from the Zafeirakis Estate.

An incredible selection of Greek wines can also be found at By The Glass , perhaps the city’s most stylish wine bar, inside the Ralli Arcade. Some 150 wines, 20 of which are served by the glass, with a menu that would do any restaurant proud: exotic salmon tartar; beef fillet perfectly cooked in red wine sauce; and sea bass burger with salmon roe and citrus sauce.

At Makriyianni, near the Acropolis Museum, is Wine Point, offering outstanding wines from small and large Greek producers, plus tasting with a smile, for novices and tourists.

A few blocks away in Koukaki, Bobo is a new arrival, serving around 70 labels, 20 of which are by the glass, paired with delectable snacks featuring Greek products, in a tastefully decorated space with attitude.

Warehouse CO2 specializes in all things bubbly, serving sparkling wine, champagne and dessert sparkling wine, as well as premium soft drinks and beer.

Small and quiet, Materia Prima is not right in the city center, but it’s popular among wine aficionados who know a good vintage. You’ll find native varieties from small-scale producers and examples of special vinification styles.
